For each edition of the Télépherique An asks artists from different disciplines to imagine and create walking trajectories during which the participating public is invited to (re)discover the Park. The walks are often developed around central themes: ‘encounter and bonding’, ‘urban network’ and ‘daylight, twilight and darkness’ for example, in order to bring to the fore the park users questions and desires relating to public space: What does the Park mean for them, in which way do they use the space, who do they want to meet there, …
Parc de Forest …
The ‘Parc de Forest’, situated on the border of Forest and Saint-Gilles, is, for the inhabitants, provides a vital connection between these two municipalities. Spacious, green, hilly slopes, well-kempt paths, and numerous wooden benches simultaneously invite, quite contemplation, vigorous play, and planned or chance encounters. The park provides an essential green lung for the city, but despite the spectacular and flourishing nature that abounds, it retains a very urban feel. The park is open and accessible – no fences with locked gates or entrances surround it – and is used by hugely diverse groups of city dweller: individuals, families, groups of children, sports teams, school groups. Countless different languages can be heard there; over and beyond Belgian’s two official languages Dutch and French, the park is used by Moroccan, Polish, Portuguese, Peruvian, Greek, Spanish, Congolese, Kenyan and many more communities who seem naturally to negotiated between each other so that a variety of different activities take place simultaneously in this truly hybrid and public space.
Working together and alongside this diversity and following the park users lead in organically adjusting and weaving in and out of each other’s activities and spaces, is the base line of the artistic core of the Téléphérique 2016. We wanted to take advantage of the capacities of the park and its users to create new and unexpected perspectives within it in order to increase awareness of the complexity of the space and our possible position within it. We want to celebrated the virtues of the park as an idyllic and open public space and use the intervention of imaginative artists to take a step further in the areas of encounter and negotiation, …
